yoga

One of the reasons we offer yoga is because it is, in general, an exercise program that is “balanced” in a biomechanical sense. What we mean by that is that if you go into a yoga class with proper biomechanical alignment, you’ll probably come out of it with proper biomechanical alignment. Contrast that to swimming (leads to misalignment in the head and shoulders), biking (misaligned head and shoulders, flexed hips), running (head, shoulders, hips, ankles – to name a few!!!)… well, you get the point.

Another reason is that we love it as individuals. Many of the employees at Physical Therapyworks do yoga – in fact our owner has been doing it since the mid-1970’s and has been included on committees for “therapeutic yoga” and asked to teach at a local studio.

Perhaps the most important reason we offer yoga is because as great as it is, it has great potential for creating injuries. In fact, we’ve had quite a number of patients over the years that hurt themselves in a yoga class, including a number of yoga teachers!

The three main reasons we’ve seen people get hurt in yoga classes are:
  • The instructor manually pushes the student into a position beyond their body’s capabilities
  • The student tries to “keep up” with classmates and goes into a range that is beyond their capabilities
  • The student is doing exercises that may be right for other people but isn’t right for them

Our yoga classes are designed as an alternative to these classes. They are in a safe “one-on-one” setting where you will learn correct alignment for poses specifically tailored to you, your needs, and your goals, learn which exercises to be most careful with, and learn which exercises/movements you simply should not do. You will work and progress at a pace that is right for you. After a period of time most people will be able to safely perform these exercises independently in the comfort of their home or in a yoga studio. On the other hand, you might find our value and service to be so great that you make it part of your regular health-care routine. We’re happy for you to use it either way as it was created for both reasons.
