how to apply

If you are interested in joining the Physical Therapyworks Residency Program, please submit the following:

  • A completed residency application *DOWNLOAD APPLICATION*
  • A personal statement
  • A curriculum vitae or resume
  • Three letters of recommendation, which will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of the Administrators and Clinical Faculty *DOWNLOAD RECOMMENDATION FORM*
     
    Among those writing your recommendations, you must include:
    1. a current or former supervisor (if a recent graduate, from a current or former clinical instructor)
    2. instructor/faculty member from an accredited physical therapy program and/or a physician with whom the physical therapist has worked in the past

For those wishing to be considered for the August 1st start-date, applications are due APRIL 1.
For those wishing to be considered for the January 1st start-date, applications are due SEPTEMBER 1.

Only complete applications that are submitted before the deadline will be considered.

Upon receipt of the aforementioned, a copy of the Program’s admission policies and procedures (Resident’s Handbook) will be sent to the resident applicant.

 


 

Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Academic education
  • Clinical education and mentoring experiences
  • Clinical experience in orthopedic physical therapy
  • Community service

Minimal eligibility requirements for acceptance into the residency program include:

  • Licensure as a Physical Therapist by the California Physical Therapist Licensing Board.
  • Completion of at least six (6) months of clinical experience in physical therapy providing direct patient care as a physical therapy student intern (with accompanied letter of recommendation from the clinical instructor) or physical therapist.
  • Having excellent communication skills.
  • Being physically able to appropriately perform manual examination and treatment procedures.
  • Observation of the applicant performing an initial evaluation (up to 40 minutes in duration) and treatment (an additional 40 minutes, maximum) on a “mock” patient, i.e a Physical Therapyworks staff member.
  • Having the psychological, social and physical stability required for participation in and successful completion of the Program.
  • Submission of an application for employment to Physical Therapyworks.
  • Complying with all Physical Therapyworks employment requirements.

Desirable resident applicants include those who:

  • Completed an extended internship, although not required, under the direct supervision of a Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.
  • Possess superior verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by completion of a personal interview with the Program’s director/coordinator, as well as clinic administrators, and by submission of a written essay with reasons, goals, and objectives for entering the Program.
  • Possess strong fundamentals in the principles of clinical reasoning and the application of orthopedic physical therapy examination and treatment procedures as evidenced and referenced by previous direct clinical instructor or work supervisor.
